Getting A New Puppy? 3 Steps To Keep It Healthy And Safe

If you're about to become the loving parent of your first puppy, make sure you're prepared for the adventure. Your puppy is going to depend on you to provide it with a loving and safe home. The most important thing you can give your puppy is love. With plenty of love, your puppy will grow to be happy and strong. In addition to love, your puppy will need protection from the things that can hurt it. Here are three steps you can take to keep your puppy healthy and safe.

Get it Spayed or Neutered

When it comes to your puppy's future health, the most important thing you can do is have it spayed or neutered. Reproductive surgery will help prevent several different types of cancers, including mammary and ovarian cancer for female dogs, as well as testicular and prostate cancer for male dogs. Not only that, but having your dog spayed or neutered will also reduce its desire to roam the neighborhood.

Make Sure Its Collar Fits

If your puppy is going to be spending time in the yard alone, it's important that you make sure its collar fits properly. An ill-fitting collar can pose a couple of serious health risks for your puppy. First, if the collar is too loose, it can get caught on branches and other objects. When that happens, your puppy could suffer strangulation if you're not outside to save it. Second, as your puppy grows, the collar can get to tight, which can cause a choking hazard. It's a good idea to monitor the fit of your puppy's collar at least once a week.

Monitor the Laundry Room

If you have a laundry room in your home, make sure you keep an eye on your puppy. The laundry room may seem like a relatively safe place for your puppy, but there are a couple of hidden dangers that you'll need to be aware of. The clothes dryer is the first hazard you should be aware of, especially if your puppy is tall enough to climb inside. If your puppy climbs inside the dryer and falls asleep, you could turn it on, which could cause serious injuries or even death to your four-legged friend. Laundry detergent poses another threat to your puppy. Laundry detergent can poison your puppy. To protect your pup, keep the laundry room door closed.

You want your new puppy to stay happy and healthy. Use the tips provided here to make sure you provide your puppy with a safe environment to grow up in. Be sure to speak to your veterinarian about other ways to protect your pup.
